Det vetenskapliga namnet "Puelioideae" fick denna underfamilj av Lynn G. Clark, Mikio Kobayashi, Russell Edwin Spangler, Sarah Mathews & Elizabeth Anne Kellogg i publikationen Systematic Botany Vol. 25 som gavs ut 2000. Typsläkte för underfamiljen är Puelia.
