Bambuhirssläktet tillhör familjen gräs och består av cirka 126 arter. Släktet har sitt naturliga utbredningsområde i norra centrala Stilla havet, västra Kanada, östra Kanada, nordvästra USA, norra centrala USA, nordöstra USA, sydvästra USA, södra centrala USA, sydöstra USA, Mexiko, Centralamerika, Västindien, norra Sydamerika, västra Sydamerika, Brasilien och södra Sydamerika.

Bambuhirssläktet innehåller arter som är tuvbildande, utvecklar rhizomer, är ett- eller fleråriga örter som har lansettformade blad. Bladen utvecklas både vid basen och utmed strået och blir från 3 till 20 millimeter breda. Plantan utvecklar ett ledat strå som blir från 20 till 70 centimeter långt. Strået är ihåligt och i änden av strået utvecklas en blomställning. Blommorna sitter i småax som i sin tur har en blomställning likt en vippa.

Det vetenskapliga namnet Dichanthelium fick släktet av Frank Walton Gould i publikationen Brittonia Vol. 26, No. 1 när den gavs ut 1974. Typart för släktet är Dichanthelium dichotomum.
