Aechmea mertensii är en epifyt i blomsterananassläktet i familjen ananasväxter.

Det sitter ungefär 20 blad i en utdragen rosett. Bladen är linjära, spetsiga, mellan 30 och 60 centimeter långa och 5 centimeter breda på mitten. Bladkanterna är taggiga.

Blomstjälken är mellan 30 och 45 centimeter lång och skjuter upp ur bladrosettens mitt. Längs stjälken sitter röda, sågkantade stjälkblad. Överst sitter blommorna i en tät, cylindrisk samling som blir upp till 20 centimeter hög och 5 centimeter i diameter. Varje blomma omges av ett brett ovalt, ulligt stödblad som blir 0,5 centimeter långt. Blommorna blir knappt 1,5 centimeter långa. Blomfärgen är gul eller rosa.

Utbredningsområdet är i huvudsak i tropiskt klimat i Sydamerika.
