Det vetenskapliga namnet Phyllostachys fick släktet av Philipp Franz von Siebold & Joseph Gerhard Zuccarini i publikationen Abhandlungen der Mathematisch-Physikalischen Classe der Königlich Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften Vol. 3 när den gavs ut 1843. Typart för släktet är Phyllostachys reticulata.
